Trimming Flying Geese

Flying Geese (FG) - you find them in a lot of modern quilt patterns. There are actually a lot of different ways to make them. For getting these super sharp points of a FG in your quilt, trimming is the key!

Today I show you how I trim them without any fancy ruler or extra tool. For this example the FG will be trimmed to 5 1/2’’ x 10 1/2’’. NOTE: Please check your pattern for the size your FG needs to be trimmed!!

Lets get started.

You need:

  • your already made FG

  • quilting ruler

  • rottary cutter

  • cutting mat

Step 1:

Use the 45 degree line on your ruler to align with one side of the triangle. Make sure to keep 1/4’’ seam allowance on top of the FG point.

Step 2:

Trim the excess from the top edge.

Step 3:

Trim off the bottom of your FG according to the size you need to trim it. In this example I trim it to 5 1/2’’ (height). NOTE: doublecheck with your pattern!

Step 4:

Figure out the mid-point of your FG-block. The mid-point is half of the unfinished geese length (in this example 5 1/4’’). NOTE: doublecheck the size with your pattern! Position your ruler and make sure it aligns with the bottom corner of the triangle.

Step 5:

Trim the excess from the right side.

Step 6: Repeat on the other side.

Voilà - your FG is perfectly trimmed and ready for the next step.
