DIY - modern quilted coasters

Honestly, we all have a bunch of scraps somewhere lying around near the sewing machine, right?

Instead of throwing them away you can make so many fun little projects with them.

Today, I will show you how to make modern coasters in no time. I love coasters - they are a nice little last minute gift and brighten up every table you put them on. They protect your table from spills and also from heat when you place your favourite mug with warm chocolate on it.

Lets get started.

You need:

  • Strips of fabrics for the top

  • Fabric for the back

  • Batting

  • Basic sewing supplies

Step 1:

Cut and arrange your strips. I used (6) 1 inch, (6) 1 ¼ inch and (6) 1 ½ inch strips aproximately 14 inches long.

Step 2:

Sew the strips together and press seams open as you go. I ended up with an aproximately 14 x 14 inch large piece – which is enough for 5 coasters.

Step 3: Cut out 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch squares.

For getting diagonal lines, place your ruler with a 45° angle as shown. Make sure that the line you cut is 4 ½ inches long. Go from there and cut the next diagonal line 4 ½ inches away from the first line. Keep on going like this until your top piece is all cut up. Subcut these strips into 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch pieces.

Step 4:

Cut 4 ½ x 4 ½ inch squares from your backing fabric as well as from your batting.

Step 5: Make a coaster sandwich.

For that, put the batting in front of you. Take a backing square and put it with right side up facing you on top of the batting. Finally, place the top square with the right side down on top of the backing fabric.

Step 6:

Pin the three layers together and sew with ¼ inch seam around. Secure the seam with a back and forth stich at the beginning and at the end. Trim the corners as shown - BUT do not cut into the seam!

ATTENTION: Leave an opening on one side to turn through.

Step 7:

Turn everything inside out and take care of the corners. Close the seam by flattening the two folded edges together and edgestich around the whole coaster.

Step 8: Lean back and enjoy your brandnew and lovely looking coaster!
