An autumn inspired color palette

Every season has its very own charm and vibes. In Austria, we often have an Indian summer during September/October. In German it is called “Altweibersommer”. Its a dry, warm and sunny weather which I absolutely love. It is perfect for hiking, soaking up all the sun before winter starts and watching how the leaves are changing from green to all the different shades of orange and red. The characteristic colors of autumn here in Austria are usually very strong, deep, warm and bright.

Nature is one of the best teacher when it comes to harmonious color combinations. All you need to do is open your eyes and have a look around you.

For this particular color palette I got inspired by the deep orange of the Hokkaido pumpkin. These pumpkins are all over the place at the moment. They are delicious and that orange always makes me smile. It is such a happy color - don’t you think?

That deep strong orange was my starting point for this autumn inspired color inspiration. By playing around with color swatches from Art Galery Fabrics, that palette slowly came together. I like to use complementary colors. Complementary colors are two colors that are on opposite sides of the color wheel (like orange and blue, pink and yellow, green and red, …). That means, you usually have a “cool” color combined with a “warm” color. For this palette, the orange tones are the “warm” colors and the blues represent the “cool” color. In my oppinion you get a very harmonious and balanced color palette by using complementary colors.

For showing you how that autumn/pumpkin inspired color palette looks in action, I recolored my latest quilt pattern - the Munic Miniquilt. For recoloring I used Art Galery Fabrics.

Isn' it exciting and interesting to see what influence colors have on a quilt? Six different versions of the Munic Miniquilt with the same color palette. Each version has a different effect and mood. The versions with more blue in it seam to be "cooler" than the ones with more orange/brown. The darker mockups feel more dramatic than the versions with the lighter colors.

I am wishing you lots of fun experimenting with all the colors of autumn. And don’t be scared - there is no right or wrong. When it feels good for you - than it is a perfect combination!
